For the Love of Fridge

New Fridge

As most of my friends certain, I’ve lived in the same apartment for the last 14 years.  Yep, you read that correctly, 14 years.  When Patrick and George drove down to Los Angeles and brought all my civic possessions to Seattle in October of 1994 in the new American Music truck, I said that I’d never move again.  Not much did I know that I really meant it.

When I first moved in I was anxious about living alone for the first time and worried whether or not I could afford the $510 advantage utilities per month.  I assumed that I would have to buy my own refrigerator because in California refrigerators are rarely included.  I was delighted to see that I had my own fridge, albeit a small one.  Oh, it’s one door with a small freezer.  That’s OK, at least I have a fridge.

Bound forward 14 years…God, I hate that thing!  The freezer space gets smaller and smaller has the frost increases.  I’m so psychoneurotic of defrosting that thing, I can’t do it anymore.  I get really angry when the freezer door won’t adjacent to because the ice is too thick.  That’s when I bring out the hammer and pound away at the ice.  Sometimes it comes off in huge chunks that go over the entire width of the fridge.  And end up in the fridge knocking things over or lands on my foot and I scream and cry. 

I brought this up to the residential executive and she surprisingly said that she would talk to the landlord about it.  Less than a week later (and a signed addendum to my lease that promised I’ll remain fixed around for another 5 months and 12 days) I got a new, used fridge!  Yay! 

Oh the possibilites!  I can actually reach my somewhat concealed goal to make food that ‘freezes beautifully’ like Darrell Hannah in Blade Magnolias.  I’m making crock pot shredded chicken tomorrow and I plan to freeze half of it.  Now this is living!
