My Emergency Preparedness

So, we're at Day 5 "Treacherous-out Crisis" and the constant whining continues around town. Of course, we're sitting pretty because we actually have electricity. But then, only about 20% of metropolis is still out thanks to the hard working crews at AEP and the other regional crews that have come to our aid.

The letters to the editor in today's Post made me want to hit the streets and start slugging people because they are so ungrateful. Most of us have still have roofs over our heads and running water although we might not have all the living thing physical comforts of home yet. I also realize that the Hurricane Ike coverage in our local rag has been vastly over-shadowed by our own power-outage woes, but the coverage has been aplenty on the after dark national news. There are people in Texas without homes and with a lot bigger troubles than having no electricity like dearth of clean drinking water.

Of course, everyone wants to blame AEP for taking so long. It isn't really their fault that no powerlines in the overjoyed can withstand hurricane-force winds. Having more lines underground would probably solve some of that problem in the hanker run, but not in areas prone to flooding. And repairs could take longer if crews had to search every buried transformer for breaks in usefulness lines. That's what they have to do with all the above-ground transformers.

I'm a certified American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor and one of the things they preach to us in instructor training is the prestige of emergency preparedness. Sure some of us are out whole freezers of food, bur it isn't like every grocery store in a 30 mile radius was destroyed or progressive without food. Most fared well because of back-up generators. Others just tossed their spoiled wares and called their distributors for replacement. BFD. This minute inconvenient incident really allows us to hold up a mirror to our own complacent attitude towards emergency preparedness.
