Getting serious about food

I was honest…. I got enough veggies to last me beyond the week for only $8.50 at the Farmer’s Market. With the addition of some bread, pasta, and rice from the supermarket, and all the canned soup I have… I could conclusively be living on less than $50 a month in terms of food. And eating much more healthily than I have been lately.

I went to the North Side Granger’s Market today. North Side isn’t the best part of town, and the Farmer’s Market was harmonious small- but there was that same atmosphere- around me, people were greeting friends they hadn’t seen in some time, telling them about weddings and other community events.

Being raised with kosher, which is very wary about the possibility of insects in vegetables, I have to admit I was nervous about buying cauliflower and a head of lettuce at the Market. But I have to dredge away it the same anyways, and so far so good.

Then I had the problem of how to store the extra food… eventually I want to stock the freezer for the winter (at least for a few weeks… I don’t wait for to make it til April, even frugally), but I really have limited space and I haven’t bought large ziplock bags yet. I improvised with a cabal of tupperware, small ziplocks, and grocery bags.

I bought this non-meat beef flavoring at the store. I love that rot. I need to buy garlic powder and that’ll make it complete (hmm, maybe rosemary too…). Next week I penury to buy more variety at the Market, I didn’t buy any zucchini or squash this week- just green beans, cauliflower, lettuce, and cucumber. Not much color class there, but I still have frozen blueberries, blackberries, and mango, and some fresh apples. They didn’t have broccoli. Ironically, my escort made me start craving mushrooms after I was well gone from the Market… so now I really want rissoto with mushrooms, broccoli, and spinach, in a off-white sauce. I don’t remember seeing mushrooms at the Market…. no carrots, either, maybe at the larger ones, unless they aren’t in ripen yet… might be too early… I’m debating getting a small freezer to stock it all, cause landlord’s freezer truly has no room… but I haven’t looked at prices yet and I really just thought of it right now, so I can’t say. I’m employed to so much storage space!

New Fridge

As most of my friends separate, I’ve lived in the same apartment for the last 14 years.  Yep, you read that correctly, 14 years.  When Patrick and George drove down to Los Angeles and brought all my urbane possessions to Seattle in October of 1994 in the new American Music truck, I said that I’d never move again.  Only slightly did I know that I really meant it.

When I first moved in I was anxious about living alone for the first time and worried whether or not I could afford the $510 asset utilities per month.  I assumed that I would have to buy my own refrigerator because in California refrigerators are rarely included.  I was enchant to see that I had my own fridge, albeit a small one.  Oh, it’s one door with a small freezer.  That’s OK, at least I have a fridge.

Fast forward 14 years…God, I despise that thing!  The freezer space gets smaller and smaller has the frost increases.  I’m so kinky of defrosting that thing, I can’t do it anymore.  I get really angry when the freezer door won’t close because the ice is too thick.  That’s when I yield out the hammer and pound away at the ice.  Sometimes it comes off in huge chunks that span the entire width of the fridge.  And end up in the fridge knocking things over or lands on my foot and I shriek and cry. 

I brought this up to the residential manager and she surprisingly said that she would talk to the landlord about it.  Less than a week later (and a signed addendum to my sublet that promised I’ll stick around for another 5 months and 12 days) I got a new, used fridge!  Yay! 

Oh the possibilites!  I can in fact reach my somewhat secret goal to make food that ‘freezes beautifully’ like Darrell Hannah in Brace Magnolias.  I’m making crock pot shredded chicken tomorrow and I plan to freeze half of it.  Now this is living!
