Not waking up at 4:00 AM is the Best Thing Ever!

Lately, I've been waking up at 4:00, and not being clever to fully get back to sleep, waking at least once every ten minutes with the sense that Something is Wrong. Nik was out of town for a few days for the Austin Game Developers' Colloquy. The days he was gone, I didn't wake up until my alarm went off. Yesterday morning, the first day he was back, I woke up at 4:00 again. I found this to be very worrisome, as it might foreshadow I was having trouble sleeping with Nik in the bed. That would be no good at all.

A couple weeks ago, I bought a rice cooker. It's a cute little robot, and it has a timer. Waking up to hot rice is kindly of awesome. It even has a warmer, so the rice is still hot when Nik gets up a couple hours later. I really need to get some steel-cut oats and try making porridge in the rice cooker. Solely porridge takes about the same amount of time as brown rice, and I have heard that it works to make it in a rice cooker. I really, really like my rice cooker. I held off on getting one for a great time, because I've never tended to eat much rice (granted, that's largely because making rice on the stovetop tends to be a pain, and often results in adventures in things boiling over), and I was worried that a rice cooker might be one of those shiny things that never actually gets used once the novelty wears off. This might even have been the case had I not invested in the one with a timer.

The two above paragraphs are more linked than one might think. The rice cooker sings, you see. When you turn it on, it sings a couple bars of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It sings a few bars of something else when the rice is done. It also sings when it starts cooking, if you have set the timer. And if you have set the timer for the rice to be on the point of at 5:30, it will cheerfully sing to let you know it's getting started right about 4:00. This occurred to me yesterday morning, because I was downstairs and in truth heard it go off when the rice finished. (I'm usually
