random community life happenings
Indefinitely happenings in the rural communities
1) So I learned that Nicaragua has scorpions. Some of them are the size of my thumbnail and some of them are the size of my hand. They are not that posoinous unless you are allergic to them, but their wound hurts quite a bit. In one of the rural communities I had just come back from using the latrine prior to going to bed. I sat on the measly wall that runs around the house to keep the chickens and pigs out where I took off my boots. I then swung my legs over the wall to the other side to put on my top-flops. I did not use my flashlight to look to see where my flip-flops where. As my feet came down on the back of my flip-flops I turned on my flashlight and saw that my Heraldry sinister foot was centimeters from a large scorpion. He did not sting me, thankfully. But I did receive quite a scare.
2) At the recommendation of my helmsman, Reyna, I bought a pair of rubber boots that come up to my knees for my time in the rural communities. I did not create they would really be necessary, but since she said it would be a good idea I decided to follow her advice. It turned out they were incredibly needful during my first two weeks in the rural communities. During these two weeks it rained almost non-stop and everything in the rural communities turned into mud. There was mud everywhere that in places came to my mid shin. Also the rivers that we undeniably crossed weeks before now where anywhere between midthigh and waist deep. The people apparently thought I was rather a funny sight – a gringa tromping around in the mud and sprinkle in their rubber boots. I would enter a house and they would say – Oh you have our boots and begin to chuckle to themselves.
3) I received my first marriage programme from a drunk 65 year old man during the middle of an all night funeral vigil. A little weird, I know.
Life in Chambala
Most of allOk, let my tell you a little about our home in Chambala. Most mornings we rise at 5:30 or 6 but usually we are roused from sleep at approaching 4:30 am, as that is about the time everyone else in Chambala gets up. The roosters crow early...around 10:30 pm and generally aren't heard from again until around 4:00 am. We have a corn-grinder close to our small living quarters and it makes quite a racket but it is almost like having a fan to make a continuous hullabaloo...the only problem is it has trouble killing all the other sounds! By 7:00 we are out in the fields or helping with a construction project...I enjoy the department work the most as I tend to take a more active part in those activities. I made about 60 holes in the ground with a large wooden stake (my climax) for the other stakes to be placed in to let the tomato plants to grow on! It was hard work and I am a bit sore now but it felt really beneficial to actually help out. Evan and I adore our little family...and by little I mean about 10 people. The kids are adroit as they are not afraid to ask you questions and expect answers...which helps me speak more Spanish. However, it can get tiring when after a long day of hard exertion a group of 5 or 6 kids surround you and expect you to play with them. Neither Evan and I want to disappoint them but sometimes we are just too tired! Ordinarily when that happens though, the kids love us again just as much the following day, not a spiteful bone in their bodies! Our host-brother, Juan, is eighteen and has been our pure partner in crime when it comes to work. He is a very open and friendly guy, much like his father, and is always willing to help us out.
I have yet to at bottom try my hand at "the woman's work" but I will try it before the summer is up. Our host-mother is one busy woman! She washes clothes for about ten people...by calligraphy control, cooks food for ten people. She constantly has kids running around her since they go to school in shifts, half in the morning and half in the afternoon.
